Typically, you pay back for 10 repayment years. If your income falls below the minimum income, your repayment is postponed. After 20 calendar years, you have fulfilled your contract, regardless of whether you've reached 10 payment years.

Supported students are obliged to submit their current contact information and their annual proof of income to Brain Capital, and pay the repayment claims in time. Other obligations, restrictions, necessary evidences or similar do not exist..

Payments under the Generation Contract are considered subsequent tuition fee payments. According to the current legal situation, these are tax-deductible at the time of payment in Germany. (see details).
The possibility of tax deductibility reflects the legal situation of July 2018. Future changes or divergent jurisdictions cannot be ruled out. This information is subject to change.

What happens in case of death?

The repayment is linked exclusively to the income of the subsidized student. In case of death, all claims are terminated. Dependants or insurances (life insurance) will not be used to cover open claims.

What happens to repayment if I have a very high income?

For those who earn a lot, the contractually agreed cap applies. Over the entire repayment period no more than the inflation-adjusted double of the amount received must be paid. In addition, there is also an annual cap.

What happens to the repayment if I have a very low income (for example due to part-time work, parental leave, etc.) or if I am unemployed?

The repayment is not linked to the occupational status, but to the amount of income. If the annual income is below the minimum income for 20 years, nothing has to be repaid. If e.g. an income above the minimum income has only been achieved in five years within the 20 years period, repayments will only be made in those five years. After the 20 years, all claims will be eliminated completely.
